Hair with Heart

HALO began in 2019, in a hospital waiting room. My sister-in-law, Elena, had just been diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. We sat together as her oncologist gently explained that chemotherapy would likely cause her hair to fall out within weeks.

Elena is one of the strongest people I know. But the thought of losing her hair — of looking in the mirror and not recognizing herself — was the one thing that truly broke her. I hand-wove the first HALO prototype on my kitchen table and brought it to Elena’s hospital.
